About Comet Backup

Comet is a fast, secure all-in-one backup platform for businesses and IT providers. Our backup software supports businesses across 120 countries in 13 languages. You choose your backup destination, server location, configuration and setup. Comet can back up: Windows, Linux, MacOS, full computers, disks and partitions (bare-metal recovery), files and folders, Microsoft Office 365 & Exchange servers, Microsoft SQL servers, Hyper-V, VMware, Synology, MySQL & MongoDB databases, Program Output, Windows Server System State, Windows System Backup, and Application-Aware VSS. Backup to your own storage/location, SFTP, FTP, or cloud storage provider (Amazon AWS, Google Cloud Storage, Microsoft Azure, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, or other S3-compatible cloud providers). Comet’s modern ‘chunking’ technology powers client-side deduplication with no full re-uploads after the first backup. Backups are incremental forever—your oldest backup can restore just as fast as your most recent. No need for differentials or delta-merging. Data is compressed and encrypted during backup, transit, and rest. No contracts. Support, updates, replication, and re-branding are all free. Test drive Comet with a 30-d...

Comet Backup is my GoTo for backup products

Verified reviewer

What they liked
  • Inexpensive, good features, remote control
Room for improvement

If it were integrated with my Datto CRM and RMM product, it would make things somewhat better

Switched From

Cost. It cost me more in one month with N-Central than I pay in a year using Comet Backup.

CometBackup is great for MSPs!

Absolutely amazing - this is a great piece of software and as a backup solution works great for us.

What they liked

So easy to setup - extremely easy to use interface and even the whole server setup is easy

Room for improvement

Not much we didn't like about it to be honest - we used to use ahsay and cometbackup so much better

Switched From

We needed a newer and more modern approach to backup solutions.

Great backup good price

The support team has been great and will even schedule a zoom to help you sort out your issue, they keep adding features and functionality so it just keep getting better, I feel like there are better solutions on the market but not at the price point.

What they liked
  • Central cloud backup Server with options to and onsite backup servers too
  • Linux option for the backup server reduces our cost
  • No cost to run the backup server only cost per client device
  • Support for most types of storage
  • DAS, NAS, S3 and more
Room for improvement
  • Restores can be slower then some competitors, no option to live mount the data found in some of the competition
  • Storage locking can be a challenge
Switched From

Pricing given to use when joining and used to price our product to clients changed and it became unfeasible for us to continue, their sales team did not care and made excuses as to why they could not honer the original price, there were a few other issue with the software and support response was also poor.

Why they chose it

"The price point was good and it included re branding and one of the biggest things was the image backup that did not rely on windows built in backup."

Comet after a year.

So far, so good. It seems to be reliable for the most part. Would like some more in depth reporting and monitoring features, but for the price, it's been very good value.

What they liked
  • Quite easy to set up, inexpensive pricing
Room for improvement
  • Need to be able to back up MS365 data without relying on a dedicated endpoint at the client end
  • We can't use it for MS365 backups without that feature and are using another backup tool for that side of backups
Switched From

Pricing and feature set. Comet had more features for the price. We also loved the idea of self hosting the server and using Wasabi / S3 as a storage target.

Why they chose it

"Pretty much it came down to price. Veeam and Cove were both more mature platforms, and had more features, but Comet ticked our boxes at a better price point."

Working great so far.

Verified reviewer

What they liked
  • I found it simple to set up the server
  • I like that it's pretty customizable and the one time I did contact support, they were friendly and helpful
  • It's just worked since I got it installed
Room for improvement
  • Not sure, maybe wish there were slight discounts on the per seat licenses or something when self hosting, but really, I don't think there is room to complain about pricing right now, it's a significantly better deal than something like Veeam when you just need something simple
  • Maybe some kind of automatic backup verification that can reload backups into VMs, check they boot and such and then delete similar to what bigger backup software have, but that's a big feature
  • Oh, and maybe an obvious way to use your own SSL certs instead of LetsEncrypt
Why they chose it

"Pricing largely, and in the case of UrBackup, it was just too complex for me to get set up and working right."

Attractively priced backup solution for service providers

Verified reviewer

What they liked
  • Product is very easy to use
  • Wasabi cloud storage is fast, cheap, and fully integrated, requiring zero setup
  • No issues installing on a wide variety of machines and OSes
  • Does not pester users; console provides comprehensive overview of status across clients and backup loads
Room for improvement
  • No Google Workspace backup
  • Costs for backing up Microsoft 365 are out of line with otherwise very reasonable pricing for backup software
  • Would like to be able to support older versions of Windows Server, because we all have those old servers sitting around somewhere
  • There are some issues to beware of regarding multiple jobs backing up to a single repository
  • If a job doesn't complete, you could end up with a locked repository that keeps other jobs from running
Switched From

COST! Cove Data Protection is hugely expensive, but is more hands-off reliable and verifiable. Comet requires more admin time to make sure things are going well, but it is 1/3 of the cost.

Excellent backup software

We have used a fair number of backup software, all with some challenges. With Comet we have no issues at all.

What they liked
  • Backup servers are available for Windows and Linux
  • Installation and configuration is very easy
  • Setup and executing backup jobs works perfect
  • Restore also no problems
  • They make new versions very regular, so many new features over time
Room for improvement
  • Overal the product works great
  • For virtual machine backup we use different software
  • If at some point this could be integrated in Comet backup, that would be excellent
Switched From

We did have a maintenance contract with Ahsay. But then they decided that if you wanted to go to the latest version you had to buy it again. A company this unreliable is not a company we want to be in business with, so we switched to Comet.

Why they chose it

"No alternatives were considered."

the best backu psolution I have found to date

I have used comet backup for several years and it ticks all of the boxes - it is easy to use, supports all different client scenarios and can back up data, sql databases and so on. It is centrally managed which is great, it backs up data very efficiently and the thing I like most about it is that you have the option of using their fully managed backup servers OR installing the software on your own infrastructure and using your own servers for the backup sets. Many companies dont offer this and it often makes backu very expensive, whereas with comet backup I can use my own affordable infrastructure and be in control of everything myself.

What they liked
  • I love comet backup because it is easy to use, feature rich and also gives me the option of managing my own infrastructure for both the server application and the backup storage
  • It is the best backup solution I have found in this respect
Room for improvement
  • The only bad thing I can think of is that restores take quite a while and it doesnt seem to save on transfers when some or part of the files being restored already exist locally
  • But that is me being very picky and overall I love comet backup

Gets the job done

Very well. There is nothing with the backups I see as a problem. Gets the job done.

What they liked
  • Good support, good options
  • It can backup everything I need with ease
Room for improvement
  • How to calculate the billing per month per tenant could be easier
Switched From

To not having to deal with our own hardware.

Why they chose it

"Features and the easily understood pricing."
