Overview

About Shopify POS

Shopify POS is a point-of-sale solution that helps retail businesses streamline operations related to marketing, inventory management, payment processing, product reporting and more on a centralized platform. The omnichannel selling module enables staff members to configure email-based carts, send product recommendations, manage online purchases and handle shipping operations. Shopify POS allows employees to categorize products based on multiple categories and variations, such as type, season, size, color and material. It lets team members request stock transfers, maintain inventory counts, create purchase orders and handle demand forecasting processes. Additionally, it enables professionals to create customer profiles with information, such as contact details, customer tags, order history, shipping details and marketing preferences. Shopify POS comes with an API, which allows businesses to integrate the platform with several third-party solutions. It is available as part of Shopify on monthly subscriptions. Support is extended via email, phone, documentation, community forum and other online measures.

Imperfect, but a must-have if using Shopify

Shopify POS is improving all the time, but still has room to grow. If you are already relying on Shopify for e-commerce, Shopify POS is by far the best choice for in-person sales despite its limitations. It's tempting but ultimately inferior to use another POS platform and set up the necessary integrations between it and Shopify ecomm. If you are not relying on Shopify for e-commerce, investigate Shopify POS very carefully. Don't presume that it has certain features -- generate a complete list of every POS feature that you rely on, especially features that are specific to in-person sales, and verify that they are included natively.

What they liked
  • The interface between Shopify's ecommerce platform and its POS platform is almost seamless
  • Some very helpful natively included tools connect the two
  • To name a few: - You can easily make an order in Shopify POS for shipping or fulfillment from another location
  • - Store credit is interchangeable between POS and online
  • - The mobile app is excellent
  • - Setting up a new location (such as a pop-up market) is intuitive
  • - Inventory, customers, orders, reporting, and discounts are seamlessly integrated between Shopify e-commerce and Shopify POS
Room for improvement
  • There are many features that you would assume are natively included in Shopify POS that are not present
  • Here are some striking examples: - You can not look up past orders by customer phone number
  • - You can not generate a list of past customer orders by line item
  • - Fractional product quantities are not supported
  • You can't sell 1
  • 522 kg of apples
  • You would have to sell 1522 grams of apples, and price per gram
  • - Shopify POS is not supported on desktop computers
  • - Offline functionality is severely limited
  • - Printed receipts are capped at 50 line items
Switched From

We were already relying on Shopify for e-commerce. We made the switch to have full integration between in-person and online sales.

Why they chose it

"At the time, Square had frequent system outages. Shopify's reported uptime was better."

Good experience

It has been a good experience. Definitely have to check the system prior to starting day or events. It updates a lot

What they liked
  • It so easy to use and update at the same time
  • You do not have to have products in the pos to use when you are at events
Room for improvement
  • It is hard to connect the card readers
  • It took us a minute to get the card reader to work and once it did it was ok

Shopify POS is great for small business, but drops off as business grows

For its price point, Shopify POS is easier to use and more customizable than other POS software/hardware combos like Square, but greater ease of access and business use is locked behind paywall tiers, and smooth flow of business can be disrupted by occasionally unreliable connections to external hardware like printers and card readers.

What they liked

Straightforward usability for both employees and customers, easy integration with third party apps and hardware

Room for improvement

Unreliability for some hardware connectivity, POS can be slow to update and integrate with online store and back-end inputs

Switched From

To integrate better eCommerce capabilities

Why they chose it

"Previously used square, didn't offer the eCommerce customizability and and integration we were looking for"

All in one POS system

It's pretty pricey, But with that said, It's super easy to use, It has a wide range of awesome features. So really it's great for both a brick and mortar retailer or an online business.

What they liked
  • It easily syncs to our online Shopify website, It's also available offline for cash sales too which is a plus
  • It was simple to to teach to our staff they all caught on rather quickly
  • Also because it integrates with a lot of other apps including our Google merchant center so our awesome store shows up on Google as well
Room for improvement
  • It is more expensive than my boss really wants
  • Because we are a smaller hotel
  • The 3 day free trial was just not enough
  • So we paid for the basic plan for 6 months so that we could really be able to check out all the features
  • The advance features are quite expensive
Switched From

We had a lot of issues with funds being held, and transaction fees are very high.

Why they chose it

"It was up to the boss, He decided Shopify was the best bet since we already have a Shopify shop website"

Not a perfect fit for a brick & mortar business

Shopify POS was very easy to migrate to on the front-end and we were able to complete the migration on our own with our internal resources and without any vendor help. However, we quickly learned that inventory management was a challenge without a robust, 3rd party application to help us. Also, we had high hopes for more omnichannel business, but once we learned that our product did not sell well online we were stuck with a product that was not optimized for how our business actually operates.

What they liked
  • Front end is easy to learn, easy to use by retail staff
  • Hardware is affordable and easy to acquire
  • Easy Omnichannel right out of the box
Room for improvement
  • If you are more of a brick & mortar business and do not do a lot of web/online business, it will feel like an imperfect fit for your business
  • Also, you will need a 3rd party solution for robust inventory management, especially if you are a multi-location business
Switched From

Xstore was quite outdated and the cost and complexity to stay current with hardware and compliance was too high. Just getting tap-enabled EMV credit card readers was difficult. I did not want to be held captive by last-generation hardware limitations any longer.

Why they chose it

"Front-end users really liked the Shopify POS interface and the cost to get started was minimal. Implementation was also simple enough to where we could do it without any external help."

Overall great platform.

Overall it's a great platform. It's very user friendly and our staff have an easy time using it.

What they liked
  • It's extremely user friendly and doesn't take a lot of time to train someone
  • Great layout
Room for improvement
  • Shopify will continuously make updates and not inform their customers about the changes
  • It isn't until we need to use a feature and it isn't there anymore, that we realize the changes
Why they chose it

"Shopify has better ecommerce options than square which we needed to prioritize."

Nice system to work with

I really liked it and how friendly it looked. It didnt look like a coded old system that you would have to stare at for hours

What they liked
  • Its interface is easy to use and does not feel overwhelming to learn or use
  • It allows for mistakes and to correct what was put in
Room for improvement
  • The way certain tools would not work correctly so we would need to be on the phone to correct it
  • But it might've been our system and not the tool we were using

Shopify POS for the win!

I use Shopify POS on a monthly basis. It has served me well as both a seller and a customer. I would recommend Shopify POS to others looking for an ecommerce tool.

What they liked
  • Shopify POS is easy to learn and use
  • This program facilitates online sales through automation, making the process simpler for the customer, as well as the seller
Room for improvement
  • I haven't had any issues with Shopify POS
  • I feel it is as secure as its best competition
  • Perhaps other users have experienced more bugs than I have
