Tableau - Powerful but Complicated
Overall I'm impressed with the power of Tableau to analyze massive data sets and present them in a visually appealing manner. I am non-technical, so I did have some trouble in live-connecting to a data source.
I like how powerful it is in creating dashboards that leverage very large datasets
- It can be a bit cumbersome for non-technical folks
- In particular, I had a challenge connecting my data source (in a live sort of way) to my dashboard
Switched From
Looker was too slow and also crashed with extremely large datasets.

Dynamic and Intuitive Tool for Data Analysis
Overall, Tableau is an excellent tool for data analysis and dashboard creation. You can quickly connect to multiple data sources, blend datasets, and visualize key metrics easily.
- Tableau has intuitive and flexible data visualization capabilities
- You can explore data visually in real time, spot trends, outliers, and insights without the need for DAX or codes
- Performance can slow down when working with very large datasets or complex dashboards
- Also version control is very tricky and complicated so working on multiple versions is not very user friendly
Switched From
We needed more flexibility and sophistication in data visualization and dashboard interactivity.

Tableau blew it
Overall, the visuals were fantastic, but the data work needed a masters in data science to set up.
- The visualization capabilities are top notch and pristine
- The data setup is cumbersome and really complex

Tableau Experience
Tableau has great reporting functionality and is super helpful when needing to review certain data or trends within your organization. The dashboard is completely customizable, which I find myself using in meetings and presentations.
- Tableau was a product my organization implemented years ago that we utilize within our day to day workflow
- We use this software to track out orders, create reports to analyze our purchasing usage, and create dashboards
- Now I am used to it, but I found in the beginning it was hard to navigate the setup of site
- When we onboard new users I see them struggling as well when trying to learn all the features
- It also has a high cost

Happy Overall!!
Overall, I loved working on Tableau, and it was far easier to reflect percentages and explain historical and needed data to the team.
- Easy and interactive projection of data
- This helped me to project and explain data to my team not only in an interactive manner but also in a way that was easily understandable to them
There is nothing negative about Tableau, precisely, but the setup can be a bit difficult at times, as it took me some time to get started

So while Excel is easy to use and I have been using it for quite a long time, the change was advised by a senior and helped me.

A Manager's Perspective
My experience has been great. I use tableau daily to help me figure out trends and who our business is seeking to partner with. Similarly, and arguably more importantly, it provides insights into who we should be targeting and/or haven't targeted yet.
- I love the wide scope of reporting that Tableau offers
- It can be something as simple and as forward as needed, or it can be something that really dives deep into our business insights and trends
- As a manager, it really hones in on where exactly we stand, where we are trending, and how we can improve/move on from lost opportunities
- It can be a little slow in loading reports depending on the size and range of the reporting
- Oftentimes I sit and wait a few minutes for a report to generate if its a larger report

Use of Tableau
Overall, I’ve had a great experience with Tableau. It’s intuitive, visually strong, and excellent for building interactive dashboards. The only challenge is performance with large datasets, but the tool is still very reliable and effective.
- It makes complex data easy to understand and present
- I liked how easy Tableau makes data visualization—drag-and-drop, fast dashboards, and clear insights
- What I liked least is that Tableau slows down with big data and sometimes needs more manual setup than expected
- It can be slow with large datasets, and some tasks require extra data prep outside Tableau
