Powerful Business Intelligence for Data-Driven Teams

Power BI has made data insights more accessible, helped us make faster decisions, and reduced manual reporting.

What they liked

I love the rich visualizations, ease of data integration, and ability to share interactive reports with teams

Room for improvement

There are some advanced features require Power BI Pro or Premium, and DAX formulas can have a learning curve

Switched From

We needed more advanced modeling, better dashboard customization, and tighter integration with Microsoft tools.

Get Awesome Looking Dashboards and reports.

Overall its a great tool to use in your arsenal if you great at analytics and want to impress with dashboards and visuals. Takes some time to getting used to, but there's tons of community support online.

What they liked

After using many other reporting tools, Power BI stands because it does a fantastic job of having powerful analytics from multiple data sources displayed using beautiful data visualization components

Room for improvement
  • Great for more simple reports and data visualization but not designed for heavy data processing (dependent on data source)
  • Also huge learning curve to make things look the way you want them to look
Why they chose it

"I still use both, but I use Power BI mostly for dashboards and visuals"

A Tool that can be as powerful as you make it to be

Overall power BI is a really great way to take reports and transform it into presentable data to make data-driven decisions and choices. However the setup of these data tables can confuse new users if they did not attend a power BI training or are not familiar with the tools within power BI. What's nice about power BI too is that it can be integrated into other Microsoft programs so it becomes an all in one package.

What they liked
  • I like to have power BI can take reports and transform it into a beautiful data table for the user end
  • It's a powerful tool that allows for information to be analyzed by users so that data-driven decisions can be made
Room for improvement
  • Because of its complexity, it is highly recommended you go through training in order to understand how to build reports within power BI
  • The user interface to create the reports can be quite confusing without the training so it is highly recommended to do so
  • Thankfully there are different training options from basic to advanced trainings

Plenty of features and customizations

I'd say it definitely requires either getting a book to read while you're going through getting a project going or taking a class. The steps from getting data loaded, to model design, to building pages, to publishing can be daunting if you don't have the education.

What they liked
  • It has a ton of features, plenty of customization and overall it's pretty user friendly
  • It's one of those programs that once you understand it gets to be easy to get into new projects
Room for improvement
  • It's a product that you have to stay on top of
  • They update and change options/features ultra frequently
Switched From

Company leadership decided to go with a product that could be bundled with Azure, 365 and other options.

Power BI: Immersive BI Platform Experience in Review

Overall the experience with Microsoft Power BI has gone well. After learning the flow of development and how to transform/model data, a real hands-on experience becomes easier to navigate. Power BI is also connected to the Office 365 suite, so sharing and automating reports is a breeze.

What they liked

Of the well-known BI platforms, I think Power BI excels in connecting the user to an immersive experience through data modeling, transformation, and visualization within the Microsoft environment

Room for improvement
  • I think the learning curve for Power BI is steep, mostly because of the ability to utilize DAX and M-language well
  • There are built-in low-code/no-code alternatives, but to do some extraordinary visualizations, you must have some basic understanding of DAX
Switched From

One of our strategic goals as an organization was to re-imagine our analytics enablement and SAS Visual Analytics did not meet some of the technical requirements we thought were important as we mature our analytics program.

What they liked
  • Power BI is easy to use, great visuals, and integrates well with Microsoft tools and data sources
  • Love it
Room for improvement
  • Limited flexibility in formatting; performance can lag with large datasets or complex models
  • That load time is bad with large models
Why they chose it

"We have Microsoft Office 365 suite, and no salesforce infrastructure."

A Step Up From Excel

Power BI is familiar to work with, especially for experienced MS Excel users, and provides tools beyond those available in Excel to present compelling information overlays in way that can summarise for top management, and allow drill down into detail for operational teams.

What they liked
  • Microsoft Power BI is the go-to tool in the data analysis industry when taking a step up from Microsoft Excel
  • It also requires a learning curve to understand the language of the platform and how it interacts with data sources
  • The user interface includes wizard to support with the configuration of data sources, building of dashboard gauges, and has familiar tools for granting access to reports built in the platform
  • The native Microsoft “feel” of Power BI, familiarity with the layout, and guidance tools make the platform intuitive to work with
  • There is heaps of support for the platform from online sources like guy in a cube, and Microsoft’s own learn environment
  • This includes routes to certification
Room for improvement
  • Power BI is great when analysing data sets and presenting information in digestible formats eg dashboards for management, insights for operational teams etc
  • It doesn’t have the power of true analysis tools like IBM SPSS, but the use of those types of tools require advanced analytical understanding and mathematical comprehension to make use of
  • The most frustrating part of Power BI is that seemingly simple things (like ordering a series in your preferred order) is less intuitive than one may prefer
  • Often data sets have to be supplemented with additional data to present incineration in the way it is desired, and this can lead to work in Power BI taking longer than you may expect initially

Microsoft Power BI

My overall experience with Microsoft Power BI has been positive. It’s easy to use, powerful for analysis, and great for building clear, interactive dashboards, though some advanced features can require extra licensing.

What they liked
  • I liked how easy it is to connect data and create interactive, clean dashboards quickly
  • The visuals are clean, the refresh options are powerful, and it makes analysis fast and user-friendly even with large datasets
Room for improvement

I liked least that some complex reports can get slow, and certain features require Power BI Pro or Premium to use fully
